光纤适配器又通常叫法兰盘，主要用于光纤活动连接器之间的连接并固定，使光信号能够以小的插入损耗进行传输。MPO光纤适配器的连接方式与单芯的SC光纤适配器不一样，SC光纤适配器内部装配了陶瓷套筒，在SC连接器插芯连接时通过该套筒进行精确对准，而MPO适配器是采用MPO连接器插芯端面上左右两个直径为0.7mm的导引孔与导引针（又叫PIN针）进行精准连接，因此MPO适配器没有单多模之分，SC光纤适配器有单多模之分是因为套筒质量不一样。MPO适配器被广泛的应用于通信系统的基站、楼宇机房里的光纤配线架（ODF），MPO盒子、各种测试仪器上。
